GERMAN 98/05 VARIATIONS

"Allied propaganda had a field day with the Terrible Hun Saw Back Butcher Blades, which was reported to be used because of the terrible wounds it inflicted - it was actually used as a distinctive blade for NCO's and as a saw for cutting wood wire fence posts etc. After rumours of Allied mis treatment of prisoners captured with these blades it was decided in 1917 to stop production of the saw backed version totally, and either send saw backs to rear echelon troops or remove the saw back. (Note with the withdrawal of the saw back, troops had to be issued with wire saws). The modified blades were designated the S98/05 S.abg. (Säge abgeschliffen - saw removed)."

Any particular reason to why they removed the sawback on the bayonet?

After the event, the international consensus about how "decently" we should kill each other was that the saw back blade should be outlawed as it,s design was to cause injury that would not only be more difficult to "repair" due to the torn and shreaded edges to the wound but also the vastly increased chances of infection that this type of wound would cause. After millions had already perished the "humane" gentlemen of parliments and law acted!!! Leon.

the reason why the sawbacks were in the beginning of 1918 removed were explained by the German authority's. I can not understand why somebody must create a fictive story. The only reason for the removed sawbacks was the fact, that every nation in the WWI used since 1917 steel bars instead of wood bars for the barbed wire. The sawbacks became more and more ineffective. For this work the more effective "Norris-Säge" (Norris-saw) was introduced. The German army authority's explain the reasons accurate.

They also made an investigation about an potentially worse handling of German POW with sawback bayontes. The german investigation shows that no worse handling exist.

The modifications Bluing, and slot bolt... came in the year 1934, not earlier

Thanks Sleepwalker I have read that General Ludendorf in January 1918 ordered saw backs removed for front line troops. Could this have been done in WW1? also states that some were proffed near removal area or start of sawback this one has this didn't come out too good in picture. timothy

yes in 01/1918. This was in the end of the WWI.

Front line troops had to wear only bayontes without sawbacks.

To use the sawback models (so very much in stock) in the future at the front line were proofed if they can used withot swaback... this was positive, so a lot of were removed. The others were given to back units, 2 second line units and ettappe. But this untis were not allowed to use more than 50% of the total with sawbacks... but 50% was a lot...

Others maybe were removed after 1918. Sawback bayontes were not introduced in the Reichswehr or Wehrmacht

Weren't the ones that were reworked for the Weimer stamped 1920 on the cross guard? I have one like that and it has Police markings.
