To my eyes, the unit marking on the blade appears to be from an electric hand engraver.
That will be the exact same technic thats been used on almost all the NPEA crossguard engravings William.
Every letter starts with a round point from the fast turning drill

Small hand engravers have been around for quite some time. I remember putzing with one back in the early 60's. They always produce the same stuttery/jittery effect letters. The engraving on this knife could well be period-and likely is, but there's no way to know for sure.

    Hi William,

i think the engraving on the blade is 100% Original and period.
    Why?
Because the abbreviation is so uncommen and also placed on a blade ( what normally will downgrade the price) that its just not making any sense if it hasent been done period.
a copycat would use the throat not the blade, why even bother, it will not bring its price up the way it has been done.
No, for me its an Original one.
But thats the beauty of a forum, trying to put the puzzle together with the bits that are still there.

but its my opinion, and your right buddy, no one can tell for sure....
