The problem has always been with the fact that some of the pictorial evidence is known to be fake in as much as it was purposely staged for the camera by photographers either for the press or by military units for propaganda purposes. For example photos showing KL prisoners cheering en masse for their US or Soviet liberators were staged after liberation for dramatic effect.by SteveR
A further example, several iconic photos of groups of young child KL inmates being being led out of Auschwitz wearing oversize adult striped jackets were staged for the camera; the children were given the tattered adult prisoner jackets to wear by the photography units, to make a more impactive photo for public consumption. There are many other examples I could add to the body of fake or staged images that are used by some as pictorial evidence of the "truth" but are seized upon by the deniers as damning all of the evidence in spite of the truth. It is the same with gas chamber reconstruction by the Soviets at Auschwitz and the other examples of reconstructed history seen today at other camp sites, all adding to the ammunition of the denier and anti-Semites as being faked evidence of the whole.
The early post-war liberation propaganda units of the liberation forces in trying to convey the full horror to the general public back home of what they found in the camps by staging or faking pictorial evidence unwittingly opened the doors to the deniers.
Another factor in the misinformation of the pictorial record has over the years been down to the news picture agencies misidentifying photos with incorrect caption slugs that made it into print which have now become part of the historical record and are again seized upon by the deniers as evidence of a hoax. The numerous picture editors who cropped, airbrushed and retouched photos to make better print reproductions have also undermined the truth ever since the first pictures of the Holocaust were published in the media.
