Thanks, I was there a little earlier in September. None of us missed the point, nor would we, to be sure.

I first went to Berlin in January, 1975, which might as well have been in the 19th century for how far away it all seems when I am there, now.

I was there, too, on 2-3 October 1990, and I lived there for six months in 1995, as well, before it all became so hip and hop and such.

Old people can be windbags, and I am surely one.

The people who enjoy peace today should take the full measure of it, because it never lasts, and what follows is usually fairly horrible.

That is certainly an option Leon, one I shall offer to the others who come along too. Time is the factor though, a short visit to central Berlin will patently take away time from other sites...but it is something worthy of consideration...as is the site I recently addressed in the thread below, which is located near to the memorial featured in this thread.

I do like the Berlin memorial though I have not been to Berlin to see it. I kind of like the idea that you can walk amongst the blocks and feel lost in their brutalism and size. I suppose you can feel, for a second, that you're trapped in an enormous and brutal entity and perhaps reflect how the Jewish people may have felt trapped in the Nazi machine. Anyhow, it makes you think.

I have visited the Holocaust memorial in Vienna, a much smaller structure but no less powerful. It is a big concrete block made to look like books. You can't read the books but it is like they're full of the stories of those people who died in the Holocaust.

I cannot say I like the design, but as FB said, if it makes people reflect, then it works.

I first saw it in 2005 and then again a couple of times since.

I'm not trying to belittle the memorial but it is Undoubtibly ugly, but an ugly memorial to a very ugly crime. My late Mother in law who was part Jewish had the same opinion when she visited the site with us!....
