Hey TC I can't comment on these pieces but Carl the moderator has a thread on ghetto currency and the like. I want to say it's in after the battle and or related. Carl is an excellent contributor here so hopefully he comes along soon. Best regards.

Concentration Camp and Ghetto Currency
Thanks Brian!
Pair of period examples. Note the slight difference with the straight "M" and slanted leg "M" variants present. Both types (slanted leg/straight leg)were used in different denominations. The Buchenwald credit coupons were issued in the following denominations:
.50RM
1RM
2RM
3RM
KZ-Buchenwald tokens can also be found with various diagonal overprints, with "AUSSENKOMMANDO" present to designate its issue at an external work detail (Buchenwald had a huge complex of sub-camps).
Originally, they were produced using poor quality paper. Unfortunately, Buchenwald examples are arguably the most copied / replicated. Many members of the liberating US forces present at KL-Buchenwald shortly after liberation, traded cigarettes and other such goods to prisoners who, in turn, gave various items to the troops as reminders of the camp and their horrific experience - such as photographs showing the scenes / reconstructed actions of life within the camp, or these tokens.
