Holocaust related movies

Article about: Yes Gunny, it is indeed a very well produced work - and accurate portrayal of the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-II, Birkenau. I highly recommend the Nyiszli book too, which the film was based

This brings to mind the German 1977 film Aus einem deutschen Leben. Starring well-known German actor Götz George (son of Heinrich George, by the way), it is the film adapation of La mort est mon métier [Published in Germany as Der Tod ist mein Beruf].

A slightly fictionalized biography of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß, (here called Franz Lang), this is a rather gripping psychological study of one man's journey into becoming an industrialized mass murderer, mostly from a perverted sense of duty with an unquestioning belief in the principle of order and obeyance, combined with a misguided sense of patriotism and a bit of careerism.

The film differs from most of the others mentioned above as it is fully told from the perspective of a perpetrator (or rather, from a perspective accompanying said perpetrator).

Another Holocaust-related film starring Götz George is the fictional Mengele-in-court drama Nichts als die Wahrheit [English title After the Truth] made in 1999.

I watched 'Devils Arithmetic' (2000) the other night with kirsty dunst (from spiderman), Well worth a watch and haven't been meantioned!

Jewish-American teen Hannah Stern (Kirsten Dunst) isn't much interested in her family's religious tradition. But her blasé attitude changes radically when she suddenly enters a time slip back to a 1942 Nazi death camp, where Hannah learns first hand the horrors of The Holocaust and the price her family and other Jews paid because of their heritage. She also learns the importance of remembering, and how the past continues to resonate in the present.

    The Round Up (2011)
French film directed by Rose Bosche and starring Jean Reno & Melanie Laurent (she of Inglorious Basterds). Tells the story of the round up conducted by the French police (under the orders of the Germans) in July 1942 of 13,000 Jews (including 4,000 children) in Paris who were then held in the Velodrome d Hiver stadium before their deportation. The two leading actors play the parts of a Dr and nurse who try to alleviate the suffering of those being held in the velodrome and in the deportation camp.

    Conspiracy (2001)
Another HBO made for tv effort that recreates the Wannsee Conference staring Kenneth Branagh as Heydrich and Stanley Tucci as Eichmann. The whole film concentrates solely on the meeting held to determine the direction of the Final Solution. Doesn't sound like a film to grip you but you would be wrong. Filmed and acted very effectively by all concerned.

    Life Is Beautiful
Italian film directed by Roberto Benigni - who also fills the lead role. Tale about life in Fascist Italy during WW-2 and the efforts of a father to protect his young son from the horrors of the Holocaust when they are deported to a Concentration Camp by the Germans late in the war.

Recently watched "Lore" and can thoroughly recommend.

Film synopsis at Rotten tomatoes: Left to fend for themselves after their SS officer father and mother, a staunch Nazi believer, are interred by the victorious Allies at the end of World War II, five German children undertake a harrowing journey that exposes them to the reality and consequences of their parents' actions. Led by the eldest sibling, 14-year old Lore (striking newcomer Saskia Rosendahl), they set out on a harrowing journey across a devastated country to reach their grandmother in the north. After meeting the charismatic Thomas, a mysterious young refugee, Lore soon finds her world shattered by feelings of both hatred and desire as she must learn to trust the one person she has always been taught to hate in order to survive. Lush cinematography and an evocative, haunting mood infuse this unconventional take on the Holocaust legacy with unforgettable impact.

Almost forgot this one. Probably my most favourite film ever, based around the liberation of Dachau concentration camp and the 'shooting of the guards' is Shutter Island. Stars Leonardo dicaprio, who wasn't my most favourite actor to be honest but after seeing his performance in this his ratings with me quadroopled - he really deserved an academy award.
Absolutely brilliant film if you like a twist at the end which is guaranteed to spin you out. Definitely one to add to the blu ray collection and definitely not one to be missed!

As an American soldier during WWII, DiCaprio’s character is forced into some horrific scenes. These eventually lead to the accidental slaughter of a hundred SS officers. The unintended massacre plagues DiCaprio with guilt; but not too much: he still stands idly by while a Nazi commander botches a suicide attempt and bleeds to death, fully conscious.

The trauma of the death camp experience sends DiCaprio on a psychological spiral. Back home, he starts drinking. Then he marries a woman (Michelle Williams) who turns out to be clinically insane; they have three children together, who drown. DiCaprio sees his dead children in nightmares that take place at Dachau

This thread is being created to serve as a reference list for those interested in the area. Members should feel free to post any films and a brief synopsis, but please - no spoilers.

Although I have watched many, below is a short list of a few of them to introduce the format of the thread:

    TITLE: Schindler's List

SYNOPSIS: Directed by Steven Spielberg, this 1993 epic tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, an ethnic German industrialist who saved the lives of more than 1,000 Polish Jews. The film won critical acclaim and features a wonderful score with a touching main theme - written by the great John Williams and performed on the violin by Itzhak Perlman. The film also boasts wonderful performances by lead Liam Neeson and supporting actor Ralph Fiennes, who portrays KZ-Plaszow Kommandant SS-Hauptsturmführer Amon Göth.

    TITLE: The Grey Zone

SYNOPSIS: This 2001 film, directed by Tim Blake Nelson, was based on Dr.Miklos Nyiszli's book "Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account". It tells the story of the Jewish Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-II, Birkenau during the autumn of 1944. An accurate portrayal of life within the Krematoria complex at Birkenau, the film features Harvey Keitel as SS-Oberscharführer Eric Muhsfeldt and Allan Corduner as Nyiszli, the Hungarian-Jewish doctor assigned to assist Josef Mengele.

    TITLE: Out Of The Ashes

SYNOPSIS: A made-for-television production covers the story of Gisella Perl, a doctor who served at Auschwitz. Christine Lahti and Beau Bridges star.

    TITLE: The Counterfeiters

SYNOPSIS: A 2007 production directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, the film covers the work of the prisoner counterfeiters at Sachsenhausen, who assisted the Nazi attempt to forge the Bank of England pound notes during Operation Bernhard. Based on the memoirs of Adolf Burger, a Jewish-Slovak typographer imprisoned in 1942, it has been praised for its accuracy. Staring Karl Markovics and August Diehl.

    TITLE: The Reader

SYNOPSIS: A romantic drama based on an earlier German novel, this 2008 film tells the story of a mid-teen German boy who falls in love with an older woman in 1950's Berlin, not knowing the dramatic events that will later unfold. Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet star.
