Article about: Yes Gunny, it is indeed a very well produced work - and accurate portrayal of the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-II, Birkenau. I highly recommend the Nyiszli book too, which the film was based

A great man, Sir Nicholas Winton, has sadly just passed away. For those unfamiliar with his efforts to save many youngsters during those dark times, the feature below is well worth seeing. May he Rest In Peace.

The Relief Of Belsen, a 2007 production, addresses the aftermath of the liberation of KZ-Bergen-Belsen. The logistic issues and horrific humanitarian situation that faced the British medical support staff are well covered in this film - certainly one worth watching.

Came across this new film today in Tesco's 'Prisoners of auschwitz', released in mid august number 30 in the Tesco chart.
Havent seen or even heard of it before today, but it has some really good reviews.
Will have to confirm whether its worth watching though.

During the horrific violence of World War II, lovers Villi and Colette are captured and sent to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. Determined to be together, but housed in separate compounds, they vow to risk their very lives in order to escape. Based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize winning author Arnot Lustig, Colette tells the amazing true story of his experiences during WWII and his numerous escape attempts from the hell of Auschwitz. A harrowing and compelling true story set during one of the darkest periods in history.

"Prisoners in Auschwitz" is another name for the movie I briefly addressed earlier Matt (see post 43, page 5 of this thread). The original title of this Czech/Dutch production, which is well worth watching, is "Colette". The film is based on a Czech writer's memoirs.

Speaking of DEFA productions, Nackt unter Wölfen (Naked Among Wolves) also comes to mind:

Incidentally, it has now been remade for television. This production is the follow-up project of the makers of the award-winning miniseries Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Generation War). The film will air next Wednesday (1 April) on ARD and be released on DVD/BD the next day:

I finally got around to watching the new version of this one - and can thoroughly recommend it. A very well presented work indeed.

And another, as yet unmentioned film of late...

    "Son of Saul"

A Hungarian drama set in the horror of Auschwitz during autumn 1944 (although director László Nemes admits they had to film during spring - unfortunate at times as the atmosphere is patently affected). The story follows a member of the Sonderkommando and his moral survival attempting to rescue the body of a boy he takes as his own son from the flames and afford him a proper burial.

The film has won many awards and has been critically acclaimed (including winning a 2016 oscar for foreign language film).

Personally, I find The Grey Zone to be a much stronger work addressing this particular area...i.e. an insight into the world of the Sonderkommando, however, Son of Saul takes a more individual approach and is very much still well worth watching.

I've just finished watching "Remember", an excellent film released last year, featuring Christopher Plummer in the lead role. As ever with this thread, I shall not give away any secrets as the film is not one to be spoilt, safe to say that it is well worthy of an hour and a half of your time. Synopsis below:

    REMEMBER (2015)

With the aid of a fellow Auschwitz survivor and a hand-written letter, an elderly man with dementia goes in search of the person responsible for the death of his family.

An early film drama I can recall from 1960 was, KAPO. filmed in black and white, it featured a French actress Suzanne Strasberg. A study of what a human being will do to survive - and then what she might do when guilt sets in. Received a nomination for the best forwign film at the 1960 Oscars.

There were 2 mini series that was put out based on Herman Wouk's book "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" in the 80's. Lot of stars in the movie, Robert Mitchum, Jan Michael Vincent, Ali McGraw, Sharon Stone, Jane Seymour, etc..

The story is about an American Naval family just before the outbreak of WW2. Mitchum is a Naval Commander and he and his family are in Berlin prior to WW2 as Naval Attache. His son is a Naval Reserve officer and submariner who falls in love with an American Jewish girl who is in Italy with her uncle who is also Jewish and a professor. The mini series takes you through the entire war and there are sub stories for each of the main actors, the Final Solution is discussed and in the midst of it all, the Jewish girl tries to get back to America with her uncle and they are stopped in Vichy France and then brought back east. They spend time in the Theresinstadt Ghetto before finally being moved to Auschwitz. This is a good mini series with some very historical events being recreated..

Not focuses specifically on the Holocaust, but it is a major part of the mini series..
