    Default Holocaust related movies

This thread is being created to serve as a reference list for those interested in the area. Members should feel free to post any films and a brief synopsis, but please - no spoilers.

Although I have watched many, below is a short list of a few of them to introduce the format of the thread:

    TITLE: Schindler's List

SYNOPSIS: Directed by Steven Spielberg, this 1993 epic tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, an ethnic German industrialist who saved the lives of more than 1,000 Polish Jews. The film won critical acclaim and features a wonderful score with a touching main theme - written by the great John Williams and performed on the violin by Itzhak Perlman. The film also boasts wonderful performances by lead Liam Neeson and supporting actor Ralph Fiennes, who portrays KZ-Plaszow Kommandant SS-Hauptsturmführer Amon Göth.

    TITLE: The Grey Zone

SYNOPSIS: This 2001 film, directed by Tim Blake Nelson, was based on Dr.Miklos Nyiszli's book "Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account". It tells the story of the Jewish Sonderkommando at Auschwitz-II, Birkenau during the autumn of 1944. An accurate portrayal of life within the Krematoria complex at Birkenau, the film features Harvey Keitel as SS-Oberscharführer Eric Muhsfeldt and Allan Corduner as Nyiszli, the Hungarian-Jewish doctor assigned to assist Josef Mengele.

    TITLE: Out Of The Ashes

SYNOPSIS: A made-for-television production covers the story of Gisella Perl, a doctor who served at Auschwitz. Christine Lahti and Beau Bridges star.

    TITLE: The Counterfeiters

SYNOPSIS: A 2007 production directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, the film covers the work of the prisoner counterfeiters at Sachsenhausen, who assisted the Nazi attempt to forge the Bank of England pound notes during Operation Bernhard. Based on the memoirs of Adolf Burger, a Jewish-Slovak typographer imprisoned in 1942, it has been praised for its accuracy. Staring Karl Markovics and August Diehl.

    TITLE: The Reader

SYNOPSIS: A romantic drama based on an earlier German novel, this 2008 film tells the story of a mid-teen German boy who falls in love with an older woman in 1950's Berlin, not knowing the dramatic events that will later unfold. Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet star.

'Train Of Life' 1998 France-the inhabitants of a Jewish village in Eastern Europe in 1941 realise that bad things are happening to other places in the region and decide to escape en masse by getting a train and 'deporting' themselves complete with fake German guards. They meet a variety of situations and people along the way-it's a black comedy.

Thanks to all who have posted thus far. Please try to include a brief synopsis, such as the one noted here by member lithgow - it helps for those who have not seen the film.

Sunshine (1999) - It follows three generations of a Jewish family (originally called Sonnenschein, a name that literally means "sunshine" in German, but later changed to Sors, meaning "fate" in Hungarian) during the changes in Hungary from the beginning of the 20th century, to the Holocaust and the period after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The central male protagonist of all three generations is portrayed by Ralph Fiennes.

The Flat (Hebrew: הדירה) is a 2011 Israeli feature documentary film written and directed by Arnon Goldfinger. While helping to clean out his late Grandmothers flat in Tel Aviv, Arnon Goldfinger gradually discovers that his grandparents had a close personal relationship with a high Nazi official, Leopold von Mildenstein, who had headed the SS office for Jewish affairs prior to Adolph Eichmann. Mildenstein had traveled to Palestine in the company of the Tuchlers in the 1930s and kept in touch with them after the war.

    Sarah's Key

Sarah's Key follows an American journalist's present-day investigation into the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup of Jews in German-occupied Paris in 1942. It tells the story of young girl Sarah's experiences during and after these events, illustrating the participation of the French bureaucracy while also showing how other French citizens hid and protected Sarah from Vichy France authorities. The film alternates between Sarah's life in 1942 and the journalist researching the story in 2009.

The Final Journey by Gudrun Pausewang

Entirely set inside a cattle car The Final Journey is one of the most moving Holocaust novels I have ever encountered.

Reviewed by kirkusreviews" ...The horrors of the Holocaust in a haunting novel by Pausewang (Fall-Out, 1995, etc.) that opens as a young Jewish girl who has grown up in Nazi Germany boards a train with her grandfather bound for they no not where: It's the beginning of a journey to hell. Pausewang vividly evokes the indignities and cruelties Jewish citizens bore at the hands of their captors, crammed with nine- year-old Alice into the cattle trucks without bathrooms, water, or fresh air. She sees a woman giving birth on the car's floor and struggles to make sense of the previous disappearances of her beloved parents, grandmother, and others. She recalls the past few years: Hitler's rise to power, her family's temple burned to the ground, her father's lost business, and the family's eventual move into hiding. No reader will be immune to the plight of these people, powerless in the face of overwhelming evil. Although Alice's grandfather dies of a coronary and the child marches off to certain death, she is not alone, but holding the hands of a stranger and her daughters. The brutal message of Pausewang's novel lingers long after the last agonizing pages are closed."
