ARRESTBAU (Detention Block):
The Memorial Yard:
1. The entrance to the yard of the Arrestbau
2. View across the yard toward the Arrestbau entrance. Two guard towers are visible in the background, in addition to the chapel, which shall be addressed later.
3. Memorial to some of the victims killed here in April 1945, including Admiral Wilhelm Canaris.
EFFEKTENKAMMER (prisoner's belongings store):
1. A row of blocks were constructed here, that were utilised as storage facilities for the belongings many thousands of inmates brought with them to the camp.
Thank you Dave, glad that it is of interest to you.
HÄFTLINGSLAGER (Prisoner's camp):
1. This memorial garden is the former site of the disinfection building and isolation blocks. In the distance, the Arrestbau can be seen in addition to another original Wachturm. This watchtower stands over the Krematoria facility.
2. Another view toward the disinfection and isolation blocks, this time taken from the other side of the garden.
KRANKENREVIER (Infirmary area):
1. Infirmary blocks 16 and 17 stood on this site. To the left, the Arrestbau entrance.
SONDERBAU ("Special Building"):
The "Sonderbau", a Konzentrationslager term for the Häftlingsbordell, or inmates' brothel, was located near the Arrestbau. A group of women, often former prostitutes, would be forced to serve as prostitutes once more, only this time, within the hell that was the concentration camp. Prisoners paid 2RM, using Prämienscheinen (premium tokens) such as the example shown below, which they had received earlier due to increased work performance or a favourable placement within the functionary positions, for a prearranged 15 minute visit. The block was divided into separate rooms, each with a small bed and heating stove. The Sonderbau was usually guarded by Aufseherinnen.
1. This view, taken from alongside the Arrestbau, shows the Sonderbau site to the side of the detention block.
HINRICHTUNGSSTÄTTE (Execution site):
Located near to the Krematoria facility, this area, hidden from view of the camp, was used as an execution site by the SS. The location is marked by a large stone Winkel, in remembrance of those worn by the prisoners on their KL uniforms.
Amazing photos, thanks for sharing!!
Luke.
I agree with AIF,, your photos Carl have always captured the coldness,,although 70+ yrs later. What also adds to the reality is your use of time of day,,, and especially not seen,, is any people/ tourists. IMO I do not think the photos would bring the same effect with people in it. Grey and cold snowy scenery with KL remnants visible tells more of a story that what words can say. Good Job Carl. These photos in all these threads IMO are Museum worthy. Regards Larry

Re: Larry
Thanks again Larry for your encouraging comments. We often choose to visit the sites late in the afternoon, as whatever time of year it is, that is when they are at their quietest regarding visitors. It does assist with regards to taking photographs, but it also helps with reflection, which for me, is very important, especially during a study visit. Winter, early spring and late autumn are my preferred periods for this type of visit too.
Regards,
Carl
