    Floßenbürg

At Floßenbürg, the Haupteingang / Lagertor (Main Entrance / Camp Gate) to the prisoner compound did not have a fixed building or similar form of structure, such as the Torgebäude at KL-Buchenwald for example. Instead, two large stone posts - constructed of granite taken from the nearby quarry, were set to mark the entrance to the inmate's camp. Post war, the posts were moved - and the vast majority of the former prisoner camp demolished, to make way for a variety of factory workshops that sprung up on site. The original posts were then moved to the far side of the camp, tucked away on the edge of the forest behind the Krematoria facility. Today, that is where they remain. Recently, modernisation of the presentation of the camp has started to alter the site, although thankfully, in a positive manner. Reconstructed fencing has already partially been added - the posts have been set, and more foundation markers indicate the locations of former structures such as prisoner barracks. Below are two images of the former camp gate posts - these are the original posts and even have period fittings still attached. In the first image, a section of modern wire fencing has been added to period Lagerzaun posts to the right of the picture. The period gate posts stand at the foot of the steps, just above the crematorium.

    AUSCHWITZ-II, BIRKENAU

Contrasting views taken during late summer of this year and winter 2006/2007. Both images show clearly the electrified barbed wire fencing - on the recent picture, replacement wire can be made out - this section stands at the perimeter of Auschwitz-II Birkenau compound BIIa (Quarantine camp). The older image, taken from the main camp road that runs through the Männerlager (men's camp), shows both a replacement section of wire and period wire (above and below).

A lot of thought must have been put into the construction and plans laid forth.. I hope some of if not all were punished equally for their contribution of erecting such places..

Returning to the main camp, this section of the perimeter wall stood behind the former painter work detail store, a structure hastily adapted in late 1944 and then used as a gas chamber. The small area containing the Gaskammer also had a fence added to conceal the actions within.
