The area around the camp is so picturesque ,,,but so stained by the evil that lays in front of it. Hard to imagine this area being the same as the other camps. From an Ice cold and barren landscape of Auschwitz to something like this must of been more torturous for the prisoners knowing they will not enjoy the beauty of the other side. Thank you Larry. The Oberpfalz region in Bavaria is indeed a beautiful part of the world. The winding road that leads up toward Flossenbürg village is a picture post card setting, yet the site of the camp, despite its surroundings and finely cultivated memorial areas, remains a stark reminder that one stands amid a former netherworld nonetheless. Proof how man can utterly ruin both his fellow man and nature alike.by Larry C

Another view, this time showing the memorials in the distance. The building shown below was the Arrestbau (Detention Block). As we look, the commemorative markers are visible on the walls at the far end, the former yard area. The structure in the foreground originally served as the detention block, with some 40 cells present.
Today, the 23rd April 2014, marks the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Floßenbürg.
US forces from the 90th Infantry Division eventually reached the camp on 23rd April 1945. During the preceding days, the SS had evacuated the majority of the remaining prisoners - save those unfit to leave on the death marches toward Dachau. Around 15,000 inmates, including some 7,000 from Buchenwald, left on foot or by train and headed toward Dachau. Fewer than 3,000 reached the camp near Munich, although many did manage to escape when their SS guards slipped away during the night or when US patrols met them en route. At Dachau, a further 3,800 inmates from sub-camps within the Floßenbürg system also arrived later. When US forces reached the main camp at Floßenbürg, they found some 1,500 inmates who had been left behind. Approximately 200 deaths were recorded post liberation - mostly due to disease and the abhorent treatment the inmates had received earlier. Of the 97,000 prisoners that passed through the camp between 1938 and 1945 - 16,000 of whom were women, around 30,000 died either within the Floßenbürg camp system or on the evacuation marches.
Hi Carl, hope your keeping well mate. Its quite interesting to read what you have written. So some of the prisoners that were liberated at dachau a week later would have originally been here?

Yes, inmates were indeed moved around the various camps throughout the latter stages in particular, due to evacuations preceding allied advances.

Thanks Carl, all well thankyou. have you been to any rememberance services for the camps? I caught the ending of one on the news the other day I thought they said Bergen belson?

Yes Matty, I have attended such events. Most recently, the commemorative day at Holýšov, near Plzen (Pilsen) - site of the former KZ-Außenlager Holleischen, sub-camp of Floßenbürg. And yes, the liberation of Bergen-Belsen was remembered recently - 15th April was the 69th anniversary. A thread linked below addressed this, briefly. The other link, featuring Holleischen, contains images from the commemorative events - see post no.42

Following this week's KZ tour (see link below), here are several more images showing the various commemorative markers at Gedenkstätte-Floßenbürg
1+4) Stained glass windows within the Jesus in the Dungeon Chapel, located toward the rear of the former Häftlingslager (prisoner's camp). The insignia represent a French and German political prisoner's Winkel (the cloth triangle attached to the inmate's uniform)
2-3) Two views taken inside the Jewish memorial building shown earlier in the thread. The Star of David skylight is very well presented
