This image, although taken in the centre of Prague, is connected to the Theresienstadt site. The building shown below is the National Bank, where the Theresienstadt currency was produced.

Today, the 8th May 2013, marks the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Theresienstadt, the large camp-ghetto located roughly midway between Dresden and Prague in the Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren (Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) during the Nazi occupation. The liberation of Theresienstadt began on 8.5.1945, when Soviet forces entered the site, yet strictly speaking, continued over the next few days.

Theresienstadt saw a minimum of 140,000 Jews pass through during its period of existence, many of whom were elderly. Of these, it is estimated that approximately 33,000 died within Theresienstadt itself, mostly from starvation and disease. The death rate rose so sharply that a purpose built Krematoria facility was constructed near to the site, capable of incinerating hundreds of bodies every day. Many transports left for the extermination camps in the east, such as Auschwitz-II, Birkenau and Treblinka. During a ten month period in 1942, 32 transports took over 40,000 people to their deaths.
