Himmler was a bit "into the Bling", according to this photo. I wonder what that ring on his pinky looked like-it looked like some kind of signet piece. And what's that on his cigar hand?

Bouhler Ehrenfuehrer cuff title?Bouhler Ehrenfuehrer cuff title? Those with a family coat of arms/heraldry tend to wear a signet ring of this type on the baby finger. At lease that is what I infer from more or less four plus decades of the company of such people in Germany and Austria. Go look in Knigge. Maybe Andreas can do it for us.

All such regulations in the SS were humped up absurdities in any case, all of it manufactured traditions in imitation of dynastic and estate based heritage and custom, as well as secular religious clap trap. Himmler will always have the appearance of an Oberstudienrat, not so very different from Heinrich Mann/ Emil Janning's Prof Unrat in the Blue Angel.

    Viz: Siehe da!

    Adolph Freiherr Knigge
There is no such thing as a 'white lie' — there has not yet been an untruth uttered, that sooner or later hasn't led to unfortunate consequences for everyone.

Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Freiherr Knigge (16 October 1752 – 6 May 1796) was a German writer and Freemason, most famous for his book Über den Umgang mit Menschen [On Human Relations]. Although the work is more of a philosophical treatise on the basis of human relations than a how-to guide to etiquette, the German term “Knigge” has come to mean “good manners”.
    Quotes

Without inspiration, which fills the soul with a healthy warmth, nothing great can ever be brought to pass.
As quoted in ‪30 Minuten für intelligente Schlagfertigkeit‬ (2004) by Stephané Etrillard, p. 55.

In cities people think that it is good manners not even to know who lives in the same building.
Quoted in Der kleine Rechthaber: Wem gehört die Parklücke und andere juristische Überraschungen (2008) by Claus Murken, p. 79.

Über den Umgang mit Menschen (1788)
One should never forget, that society would rather be amused than instructed.
In many matters children — not ensnared by dogmatism, passion, or erudition — judge far truer than adults.

    Book 1, Chapter 2, Section 5.
Respect yourself, if you want others to respect you.
Variant: "Have a proper regard for yourself if you wish to be esteemed by others."

Act well and properly, less to please others, more to keep your own self-respect.

    Ehre das Alter!
    Respect old age!

One of the most important virtues in social life, a virtue that is becoming less common by the day, is discretion.

One should never forget, that society would rather be amused than instructed.
Variant translation: Above all, we should never forget that society would prefer to be entertained, than taught.

There is no such thing as a 'white lie' — there has not yet been an untruth uttered, that sooner or later hasn't led to unfortunate consequences for everyone.

People far too easily neglect or abuse us, as soon as we become intimate with them. To live pleasantly, one must almost always remain a stranger in the crowd.

When you are alone, never let your clothing fall into disarray. Do not allow yourself to be dirty, have poor posture, or have rude manners when no one is observing you.

No bonds last longer than those made in early youth. At that age one is less mistrustful and less troubled by trifles.

Learn to take on the tone of whatever company you find yourself in.

Lerne Widerspruch ertragen. Sei nicht kindisch eingenommen von deinen Meinungen.
Learn to bear criticism. Do not be childishly biased by your own opinions.

Do not be too much a slave of others' opinions of you! Be self-sufficient! Why, in the end, does the opinion of the whole world trouble you, if you do what you should?

For a person of understanding, interacting with children is endlessly interesting. Here one sees the book of nature thrown open, stripped of artificiality.

In many matters children — not ensnared by dogmatism, passion, or erudition — judge far truer than adults.

Vor einem grauen Haupte sollst du aufstehen!
Rise in the presence of a gray head.

Whoever lives continually in a state of dissipation and distraction, becomes a stranger in his own heart.

We see the wisest, most intelligent people take steps in life, that we must shake our head over.

Zwang tötet alle edle, freiwillige Hingebung.
Compulsion kills all noble, freely given devotion.
This is often shortened to "Zwang tötet": "Compulsion kills" or "Force kills".

This begs the question what was engraved within HIS Ehrenring? "Slb. Himmler 24.12.33 H. Himmler"?!?!?! That's one I'd really like to see.....
We will never know. Maybe it was completely plain, maybe it had just his facsimile signature and the date, maybe a completely unique inscription, like, say, "Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul."

I'm afraid the good Freiherr's works don't reside in my bookcase. (But I agree on a signet ring being the most likely one.)

Which was only fitting. Himmler, the son of a teacher, very much behaved like one himself and dauntlessly lectured and instructed even his most senior officers on everything and anything...

As for death Kitsch, honor rings and the artificial traditions surrounding them... In the man's own, rather awkward, words from a 1938 speech to SS officers:

["Why I demand these items to be returned, has its special reason; as a memento of every single SS officer and SS man. There is a shrine in which these rings are being kept, and I believe that for all generations to come, it will be an extraordinarily beautiful memory to know that these are rings that were worn by generations of officers of the SS in hard and easy, in good and bad times. I believe that, through this, a little piece of tradition can gradually be grown - one cannot create it artificially - and that, through this, with these rings that remain, with the things that are bestowed, with the celebrations, with all the inner life that was awakened again here, that, through this, we have perhaps done something more important than the Schutzstaffel could do with, say, an exemplary organisation or with a flawlessly marching regiment or with fine sports achievements for Germany. I believe that these inner things from the heart, from honor, from the soul of the true, deepest worldview, are, in the end, those things that give us the strength for today and will give us the strength for any confrontation and any fateful hour that will be faced in the next 30, 50, 100 years by Germany and perhaps by ourselves."]
