As a small point of information, the NSDAP was banned in Austria in June 1933 after a terrorist assault in Krems on the Danube. At the same time, Austria became increasingly a proto fascist nation more or less in the orbit of Mussolini's Italy, and in a state of low intensity conflict (sort of...) with Germany, which reached a climax in the events of 1934 firstly in February with the Staendestaat delivering a knock out blow to the SPOe in the Karl Marx Hof in Vienna (urged by the Duce on Dollfuss) and then the Elementarereignisputsch by the SA and SS in July 1934 in which Dollfuss was assassinated by members of the SS Standarte 89 in Vienna with the assault on the Ballhausplatz chancellery.

I am especially interested in the history of the first republic and its decline into political upheaval and the Anschluss.

Linz was to be Adolf H's retirement home and the site of his world class gallery, two books about which have recently appeared in Austria of great interest.

Thanks to all for a fine thread with excellent collaboration and sharing of the burden of knowing.

In fact, I am going back to the Danube so all of this is in the back of my mind.

on the Austrian theme and the events of 1934-1938ff. this image. This is not my property. This is the honor cuff title for one of the Wiener Standarten (i.e. 89) and the man Holzweber who was involved in the July 1934 Putsch and then executed by the Staendestaat regime and, in turn, became a martyr after the Anschluss. Today he would be called a terrorist, in fact. When one is in Vienna today, it is hard to imagine how screwed up the place got between 1927 and 1938 or so.
