Does this Bevo cap skull have a chance?

of being real? I bought this M43 cap about 30 years ago to use for re-enacting. The guy I bought it from had a whole box of them that he brought back from Germany. He said the cap was a repro made with original cloth & buttons and the insignia was real.
I just never really worried about it. I paid $35 for the cap and at the time (late 70's), original skulls weren't worth anything close to what they bring now.
I have compared it to known originals and the differences I see aren't that much different than the differences between the known originals. But my gut tells me it is fake.
I would like to know what you guys think.

It is a well known fake. These are, in my opinion, much better than the fakes being made today, but they are fakes nonetheless.
