Since the uniforms were made in New York City , it would be fun to speculate on period U.S. made jawless SKULLS as cap insignia - marked " N.S. Meyer , NY " .. ?
With only these 20 made , now that would be a challenge ..

I cant speak to the skull badge, however the badge above it may be seen at the top of page 265 in "They Too Were Americans". I know of this type of badge in both brass & white metal. It is impossible to tell from the photo which was used there, possibly both types.

One thing for certain the backs of such badges as well as their dimensions were left out of the book on purpose. It will not prevent fakery but hopefully slow it down.

By the way to my way of thinking the most important flag in the photo from a historical perspective, is the one with the black field and eagle with a white disk in its talons containing a swastika.
This was the flag of the National Socialist Teutonia Club, founded in Chicago Il. on 12 Oct., 1924 making it one of the earliest NS flags anywhere in the world and certainly the oldest of all American NS flags

Just another note about the Teutonia in Chicago the NSDAP magazine
"Illustrierter Beobachter" 21 November, 1931 has a great full page photo on the cover showing a reallly great photo of the Teutonia which gives detail of their uniforms (for example they used a swastika patch instead of armbands) as well as showing a very nice image of the Teutonia flag as it was completly unfurled by the wind that day.
Inside the magazine is an extensive article with more photos entitled
"Hakenkreuz Über Dollarland"

I find it hard to believe that the 'Bund' had over 50,000 members in the U.S. at it's height! I'd always imagined a rag tag bunch of disalusioned unemployed and thugs like Moseley's Black Shirts that ran into a few hundred.

This film sure opens ones eyes to the serious amount of people who were followers in the States, and the impressive marches they were allowed to have in cities countrywide. I guess you can't compare their idealology with the Klan, but i certainly get the feeling that this is a piece of history that the septics have done their best to forget over the following decades. Take a look at this, the planning and logistics that must have gone into these camps and marches must of been phenomonal, not to mention the money needed to do it!!

Membership in the German American Bund, its afiliates, and subsidiaries, ran closer to 120,000-125,00 with some 160+ Ortsgruppe in 47 of the 48 then United States.
