Sorry for the poor quality but this is the only example I could find showing the smaller "D" indicating service at Dachau

This is not for flag rank, but field grade rank.

Getting thereYou want this on the right, I think....and you will have to look far to find it.... I am not 100% sure the one on the right is authentic, but it is of the type.

The one on the left if Heini H's, and it belongs to David Delich.

"The shoulder strap cypher for "Oberbayern" was, depending on the period, a Gothic "O" or Latin "1". I also vaguely remember references to a transitional "Death's Head" badge which was either proposed or actually introduced, but short-lived.
I am sure d'Alquen will be able to elaborate here."

Sorry to be so tardy in replying HPL but I am in the process of moving and life is chaotic. Yes, a Deathshead shoulder cypher was approved for Oberbayern and their Gothic "O" was given to Ostmark. It was in the fall of 1938 so it is difficult to say how widespread the wearing of the badge was as the regiments were re-organised into Totenkopf Standarten in 1939 and renumbered. I don't think I have ever come across a photo of the skull shoulder board in wear. Jim Toncar has a tunic that confirms the "O" was definitely worn by Ostmark.
