Copies of these badges existed in the UK of the late 1960s.
There are variations among the originals, as in any piece of hand embroidery of the epoch. This statement especially applies to the "D" is SD
The fakes tended have a poorly formed "S."
I do not have images of these fakes, but they were described in one of the first illustrated works on fake SS insignia from the early 1970s.
As such, these old fake badges now have patina, as well.
The only way to ascertain real embroidery is to look at it and compare it with originals in adequate set of data. That's how I do it.
