Thank you. The personnel files are very interesting and also a useful corrective of what many collectors believe about our subject, which tends to be pretty two dimensional. The joy of the past and of its study lies in its richness, its detail, and in its human aspect, even in the inhumanity of war and political violence for racist reasons. This is not to say I rejoice in its violence; quite the contrary, rather, we seek detail of the past to make it tangible, real, full of color, since the march of time robs us of these things. Further, our society revels in a comic book approach or infotainment, in which the detail, the color, the essence of the thing all get lost.

Hence the expense involved in acquiring these documents is pretty minute compared to the richness they endow our endeavor. One aspect should lead to another, and the complexity of these files should make one want to delve more deeply into the whole.

But this view is the minority one, as you well know.

The problem begins with language as well as the inability of a lot of people to grapple with the complexity and detail.

The details of life in a bureaucracy and one in the midst of war symbolize a fairly advanced topic for some here. And, ever fewer people have any experience of military life much, too, which is another complicating factor.

They just want pretty color pictures and maybe a list of five things to look for. The desire for a list, especially a check list is what always kills me.

Herr Eigruber got his comeuppance in 1947.

    13................unlucky for some.

He ended up twitching on the end of a very well-used piece of rope.

Thanks, colleague Lumsden, for the additional material. The file of images in the Bundesarchiv is impressive on this theme.

We are also grateful to you for your fine writing and especially your skill to make all of these complicated issues understandable for a wider audience.

I am also sure that the ex-Gauleiter's US Army colleagues probably did not have the proper ancestry to be an Ehrenfuehrer in the SS, which you can see in the condemned man's eyes. Mauthausen was an especially awful place, while Linz was destined for great things.

You can also see the absence of shoe laces on the ex-Gauleiter along with his modische Trachten. How the great do fall.

Here is an image of Eigruber during the Mauthausen trial in 1946 to add to colleague Lumsden's nice contribution. His defiant expression adds energy to his Adolf mustache.

The theme of the NSDAP and the SS in Austria from the years prior 1938 is especially interesting. There is a large, excellent literature in German on this subject which well repays a close reading.

In You Tube there are some excellent films of Linz at the time of Anschluss as well, i.e. home movies of the events in March 1938. Wien is included, too.

Since there is so much talk nowadays about political violence, extremism and terrorism, the years in Austria from about 1926 until 1945 are especially suggestive and interesting. These years represented a remarkable contrast with the decades prior to 1914 and those since 1955.
