not necessarily a replacement pip as such, the tab may have been up-ranked and another pip added at that time, or simply thats all that was available,
there was not as much attention to such details then as there is now!

True, but in that case there should be a hole visible in the middle from the pip of the rank of Hauptsturmführer that was removed when he became Sturmbannführer.

Yes, indeed. I see those piercings to now on the back. The holes closer to each other what can explane that the pips were closer to each other due of the fact that there were 2 rankstripes aswell in front of those pips, which were removed when he became Sturmbannführer.
The tab indeed looks legit.
