I had an Olympia typewriter in the portable version for many years. It was a thing of wonder like a Heckflosse Mercedes Benz.

The problem Sido was encountering was that the Verwaltungsamtes-SS seemed to have no knowledge of the badges he had successfully ordered in in 1935. This is the next document I have found, dated one month after his request for authorization to get the badges made himself, in which the Verwaltungsamtes-SS now requests clarification from the SS Main Office.

    The last letter says:

    "Transcription.

    The Head of the SS-Hauptamt
    IV/V3/17g/7.37/Le.Z,

    Munich, 14th July 1937

    Re: SS-Pilots' Badge

    To the
    SS-Hauptamt
    Hauptabteilung IA/O.
    Berlin

    Forwarded for your information.
The Verwaltungsamt-SS is unaware of an SS Pilots' Badge. SS-Sturmbannführer Sido was not informed about the referral.

Thus, the story so far is: On 10th June 1937, Sido requested permission from the RZM to have these badges made for himself.
They didn't know what to make of that and, a month or so after receipt of the letter, forwarded the matter to the SS-Verwaltungsamt on 12th July 1937.
The VA types had never heard of that badge either and passed the matter on to the SS-Hauptamt on 14th July 1937.
Next, the SS-Führungsamt became involved and apparently queried Sido on the nature of the badge and the reasons for his initial letter. Sido replied on 20th July 1937.

And so the Sido Saga continues.
Sido's reply of the 20th of July together with the two transcripts of the award of the badge was in direct response to this query sent to him as a result of the general lack of knowledge about the flying badge he was requesting.
I will look for the missing transcript from the July, 20 letter and hopefully any follow-up correspondence.

Translation of the above letter, sent by none other than Paul Hausser:

    "Transcription.

    IA/O
    File ref. 23 d/14.7.37
    SS Pilots' Badge
Your letter to the Reichszeugmeisterei of 10.6.37

    17th July 1937

    To
    SS-Sturmbannführer Franz Sido
    Braunschweig

Your letter of 10.6.37 directed at the Reichszeugmeisterei der NSDAP has been forwarded to the SS-Hauptamt for handling.
Information is requested: When and by which order was the SS-Pilots' Badge instituted. No documentation on this matter is available here.

    Heil Hitler!

    The Head of the Führungsamt
    signed: Hausser
    SS-Brigadeführer

For the accuracy of the transcription:

    [signed]
    SS-Hauptsturmführer"

    Aha, the burecratic merry-go-round!!
It existed then as it does today....

I can feel Sido's patience waning.
