Sepp Dietrich's cap eagle...

Article about: Very interesting stuff, guys. At what level, do you suppose, would these kinds of alterations of a uniform typically be overlooked? Obviously an EM/NCO would have a much harder time pulling

The simplest answer is: Because he chose to.

Non-regulation uniforms and insignia were commonly worn by Generals and Sepp Dietrich in particular was well known for having a penchant for individualisic flourishes.

He not only preferred the Heer pattern eagle for his peaked caps - he has been photographed wearing various caps with both flatwire-woven and bullion embroidered eagles - but also used gold cap cords and cap pipings as well.
He even wore his SS sleeve eagle and Adolf Hitler cuff title in unique gold - instead of silver - embroidery. All of this imitated the use of gold insignia by Heer generals.

(At the same time, he still wore his old pre-war, "Allgemeine-SS-style" shoulder boards well into the war instead of the "Army-style" Waffen-SS pattern. This can also be seen in this photograph.)

Anyway, as has been said above, the wearing of Heer-pattern cap eagles by Waffen-SS personnel was not unique to Dietrich and the use of Heer-pattern breast eagles adopted as sleeve eagles was even more common. It would seem that this was sometimes due to simple supply problems and sometimes done on purpose; either from simple personal preference or even as a deliberate "statement".

well said. The process of aping army fashion in the armed SS began early on with the introduction of a grey uniform, and formed a source of irritation to Himmler, who was at odds to distinguish his black order as an elite on a non estate, non Junker basis, at odds with what the Nazi perceived as the false aspects of a monarchical and feudal tradition. Further, a deliberate disregard for regulations and orders has always operated in Germany, and does to this day in my own experience of same. Eigensinn and Eigenmaechtigkeit are quite normal. German uniforms of today are far less uniform than other NATO uniforms, actually.

Sepp Dietrich's cap eagle...He wore an army badge from an early date.
It was the army cap eagle that prompted the introduction of the 1935/6 style of cap eagle associated with the SS.

It does seem that some collectors beleive that clothing regulations were set in stone and that no one would dare not to comply , which was of course complete tosh then and still is , many contemporay photos are available such as the above to prove otherwise.

Fashion exists in any Army and always has done in my day in the British Army we called it Ally or Wary.

By the way nice Cap FB !!
