Angolia and Mollo are indeed right: crimson existed within the SS.

In the "Verordnungsblatt der Obersten SA-Führung", number 17 from February 1934 with ziffre 18 it is said:
SS-leaders commanded for service in the staff from the OSAF do wear collar-patches in crimson, the backing for the shoulder-strap also is crimson.
At the arm they do wear a cuffband in BLACK with in silver "Oberste SA-Führung".

    So.......crimson was a true fact
and was not "invented" by the earlier mentioned authors!
Just to avoid any misunderstandings: We did not doubt the existence of the crimson collar patches.
This was merely about Angolia's theory that they might be seen in the specific 1933 Himmler/Wolff photograph seen both in his book and in the first post of this thread.

the color for the Stammabteilungen must got choosen also from somewhere, possible the base color was given from this short lived time wearing "white" high rank patches.

The Stammabteilung was the nucleus company for persons over 45 years of age, who were in fact the majority of basic members
of the later Standarte and were retired from active duty.

In my opinion the color grey was chosen in lieu of order Ch.II. Nr. 1134/34 from the Oberste SA-Führer from January 27, 1934
in which the so-called Führerkorps was arranged, divided into active leaders, leaders "zur Verfügung", Ehrenführer, Rangführer
and leaders for the SA-Reserve II. The leaders for the SA-reserve II had to wear silver-grey collar-patches.

SA-Reserve-II were also men above 45 that were reliable and usable (letter der Oberste SA-Führer, Ch. 2273 from February 12, 1934).
In this letter it is explained that only staff-members for the SAR II did wear the color silvergrey.

I think this may have been the closest reason for chosing the color grey for the Stammabteilungen for the SS in recognition for their valuable
service (in Anerkennung ihrer Verdienste). Letter Chef des SS-Hauptamtes IA/O II Nr. 04200/35 from June 27, 1935. This letter was signed
    by SS-Gruppenführer Heissmeyer.

Thank you, sir, as ever your posts are highly pleasing and definitive for us all. My thanks also to my friend in Texas from whom I bought this fine uniform, minus the cap, though.....
