deep bow your direction, good f-b. seeing the inside of the, if you will, 'heydrich hat' and knowing what the black schiffchen looks like makes me ever more dubious of the one I posted about...
on the other hand 'kappe' is austrian german as you tell us - so maybe someone outside of but close to the ss supply (maybe a would-be supplier?) chain made it?
okay! I know this is pulling a pretty long bow and I also ache for pix.....
incidentally - does the black one you you show have the white, boxed 'VA' and date along with the tag?

I think "kappe" makes the prospect about 99% unfeasible.

There is a lot of friction between Reichsdeutsche or Piefke terms and then normal Austrian usage derived from the KuK period.
Even today, military German from the Federal Republic and Austria is often different, even if both armies have common roots in the Wehrmacht, and when you look closely, these roots are very pronounced, that is, in a lot of customs and habits and terms...not in national socialism, of course.

I do not know what this black cap looks like other than these images.

The VA stamp is heavily faked in the black side caps.
So are the SS Feldmuetze tags, in fact.

In any case, it is all too droll.

Best of luck in your collecting and may all your dreams come true.

Go to Austria and see all the Kappen on all the heads.

I will bring you some KuK Kappen back, when I am next in Northern Virginia.

You can also go to the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in the Arsenal and see all the things they have, too, including this here.

You will also notice that this site gives better service than its competitors as regards visual evidence. This is what Franz Ferdinand's coat looked like before the visit to Sarajevo went wrong.

vielen dank fuer alles. good to see how even in the ns-state there were whiffs of sentimentality and tradition about hats, mountain pants, the edelweiss, usw. I'd guess a lot of these hill folk - like those in other countries - paid more lip service than fealty to the central government in berlin. and anyhow as you're suggested, austrians let alone bavarians were/are a different breed o'cat as it were.

re the old-style uniforms: I think the tri-star arrangement-cum-stiff collar was worn practically up to the time another unfortunate - herr dollfuss - was sent to his maker in that nazi coup attempt in '34.

maybe we can meet for linzertorte at WASH DC's cafe mozart, there to mull Issues of Common Concern.

    'wiederhoeren!
