It was supposedly picked up from a veteran at a Gebirgsjaeger reunion, but I know to buy the item and not the story, and so forth.

I am actually not really that interested in buying it. I just wanted to learn more about it. I looked at all of the SS edelweiß insignia on the forum and this one just didn't seem to match up.

Very likely the reunion story is true and the patch was made up to give to the attendees. It is definitely not a period variant in my opinion.
