Hey Brocky. I'm not sure what to make of it either but it's not SS nor WW2 period IMO. It's way too big to be a collar tab, no rank tab or any tab to my knowledge was sewn thru the backing, and it has no wear or age to it at all. Plus too the materials are wrong. Perhaps post war German military or just outright fantasy piece? Best regards.

Edit: I did find this on German daggers.com I still am uneasy about it being sewn through the backing but perhaps because of it's length... maybe?

I think here is actually no other efficient way to attach " Tresse " then stitching through , same as e.g. collars & shoulderboards .
Apart from glueing it on ..
