Many of these women, especially those caught up in the East, found themselves in the end slowly strangling at the end of a rope. It must have taken a special sadistic personality to do their job.

To augment, the well known image posted earlier in this thread from the Karl Höcker album - he was adjutant to the final Kommandant of Auschwitz-I, the Stammlager (Main Camp), Richard Baer, does not feature SS-Aufseherinnen. The image shows SS-Helferinnen - these women were members of the auxiliary units, operating telephones and such - their duties did not include guarding the prisoners within the Häftlingslager.
