That is an absurd and ridiculous amount of money
Well, yes, when you consider that such caps could be bought for USD 500 in 1974, which was, at that time, an absurd and ridiculous amount of money....as you say.

Once again the chicken little "the sky is falling" syndrome appears. I have seen this manifest itself several times in my collecting career first dating back to the early 1970's. Quality with rarity and desirability will always hold it's value

You know better than do I. In fact, the 1970s saw the prices of these things rise sharply when the stagflation obtained and the collecting of such items became more organized and hierarchical

There are some beautifull caps in this thread. They will most probably always be beyond my budget. It's still a pleasure to see them.

Thanks for the constructive comment. My original post was offered somewhat in the trope of doom and paranoia that is all too frequently seen in such spaces.
My genuine interest, however, is data about what some of you deem to be a "sane" price, if these other, publicly recorded prices are "insane."
I honestly do not know, as I do not frequent the militaria fairs. I know what I have paid over four decades for such regalia.

FB i imagine you have seen many fluctuations in prices over those four decades as a collector.
As you know my main interest is in insignia i have seen many changes in prices in the very short time i have been collecting.
