Karl and Ilse Koch were indeed among the most despicable persons of the Third Reich period (in which despicable persons were not exactly scarce to begin with).

At least - unlike some others - they got what they deserved, which is particularly satisfying in the case of Karl Koch's downfall courtesy of Messrs. zu Waldeck-Pyrmont & Morgen and, ultimately, his execution by the SS at the Buchenwald camp. Had he surived the war to find himself indicted, sentenced and executed by the Allies, he would have probably considered himself a martyr for the Nazi cause.

By the way, the photo of Koch and his first-born child Artwin seen in post # 20 is from a photo album commissioned by the Kochs as a gift for Artwin. (In the album, the photo was captioned "Papi macht Witzchen." ["Daddy is joking"])

76 pages long, the album was manufactured in the concentration camp's book bindery, with handwritten captions and drawings made by an inmate. Some of its pages can be seen here: "Papi macht Witzchen" | MDR.DE (use the "arrow"- or "number" buttons in the right half of the page to navigate.)

Thanks for this nice addition. Apparently another of Koch's photo albums ended up with the NKVD or GRU and formed the subject of an exhibition elsewhere.
Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk is my favorite, in fact, as their documentaries are always highly pleasing. The Koch album is as repugnant as the persons themselves, with the haute bourgeois false idylle erected atop the human misery of state terror.
Thanks for including it, and such is a useful corrective to all the hoo haa about tank killers and others who are made somehow to have lived separate from the regime.
A handful of Himmler's albums exist in the Hoover Institution in Stanford, but I do not recall them as being nearly as creepy as this Koch one.

This image is from the other Koch album, a barracks clothing locker which shows that the SSPB Mann was well equipped, or at least this person had two peaked caps and at least three tunics....included are images of SSTV recruits and the humiliation of prisoners. The latter is more telling than any image devoted to Uniformkunde.

This volume I like very much on the theme of women and the SS. The reviewer at the on line thingy liked it less than do I, but my viewpoint is less critical. Daniel Goldhagen revived the Ilse Koch trope with the Hitler's Willing Executioner book in 1996, a book I dislike very much, but I have not read all the sound works on women as participants in the SS system and surely eschew the pornographic aspect of same that appeals to a certain readership out there....
