But still not a cap you should buy!!
But still not a cap you should buy!!
The problem with antique dealers (as a general statement as there are always exceptions) is that they are generalists who know very little about militaria. This is a hobby that requires a high degree a learning, study and specialization given the huge number of fakes. That is where the value of high quality Forums proves it's worth
It is nearly impossible for any collector to master every category no less an antique dealer who sells everything from furniture to jewelry to knick knacks. But with a forum we can draw on the knowledge of dozens/hundreds of highly qualified experts in individual categories
Across different Wars and countries, we collect helmets, daggers visors, insignia, uniforms, belts, buckles, awards, rifles, pistols etc. etc. And within these categories there are many sub areas and then hundreds of variations and an equal number of fakes.
So I would put little faith in an antique shop pointing to an online photo to show an items is real. If they really knee, they would point to the specific attributes of this visor.
There is little collector value in this visor. It was a nice piece at one time, but it has now been humped up. It is potentially possible to restore it back to its original specs but it will always show tell tail signs and if the velvet has been glued on? ..... it is a lost cause forever
Edit: we now know the insignia are real. So there is some value there plus potential restoration of the visor. But the visor, even if it can be restored will forever be "messed with"

My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

Well that is a massive surprise!!!
If the cap can be purchased for less then the value of the insignia you might want to remove them (very carefully as the pins can break ) and then see if the rest of the visor can be restored as I noted above.
This and the other thread on this visor/insignia really highlight the value of the forum. Different specialist providing expert opinion to deconstruct this item

I have seen this cap before. It was on a well known American (I think) web site a number of years ago. This is the problem with SS collectibles and forums such as this. 'Experts' give their opinion which are often contradictory. You would have to have this cap in hand to give a well informed opinion. (in my opinion).
My take: the insignia is original, and the cap is a conversion to SS from a Heer visor. Impossible to say when it was done, but the added velvet band does show appropriate wear for its purported age...
