Maybe done by the original owner , to follow regulations .

I thought they stopped the Unit and Sturm numbers before or at the same time as , the May 1940 regulation that removed the piping . Thus only altered ones would exist . Production would be against regulations .
The piping has been added by soldiers by themselfs. But most of the owners give the insignia to the private tailors, and they attach it to the uniform, if the serviceman has no skills for this job. Normally the digit under the scull show the Hundertschaft number on it, or later Kompanie number
