The shield patch with the downward-pointing dagger over a cogwheel is for the French Garde des Communications [or, to use its full name, the Service des Gardes des Voies et des Communications], i.e. the Service of Guards of Highways and Communications, a security force raised in 1941 that was tasked with protecting road and rail communications against resistance activities.
The shield symbol was worn as a cap badge with the service's uniform or as a cloth patch on an armband worn with plain clothes by conscripted civilians. (My guess would that what he have here is the latter.)
I cannot comment on authenticity, though.
