    Default Wear of the Kepi

Photographic evidence would suggest that the kepi and brown shirt were kept around after 1934 primarily for sporting events but up until now I had not found any documentation to support this supposition. In going through some SS-Hauptamt files I finally found a reference to this practice. It comes as late as January 1937 in a document for a winter sports event. The relevant section asks Patrol racers to bring along the old brown uniform blouse with badges and the kepi as a lightweight uniform to wear in the event of warm weather.

This document makes reference to the VA SS quarter master system in intriguing ways I had not seen, in my limited reading of the documents.
Do you have other documents in this vein in the RFSS files? Thanks for the fine material.

In this particular case the practice of supplying ski clothing to members of the SS by the Verwaltungsamt, later to be returned, was to ensure consistency at the sporting events. In addition members were not expected to purchase items for special use, like skiing and the pack marches out of their own pocket. There are several documents that refer to this practice, this earlier one from Pohl in 1936 being quite specific. Although it announces the cessation of the provision of clothing for staff members of the SS-Hauptamt, section 3 points out that earth grey clothing for drill service, knapsacks etc., and special technical clothing are exempt from that prohibition. (Apparently officers still had to purchase their earth grey uniforms.)
Hopefully this is the sort of thing you were looking for.

Here's the full English translation for the above Pohl document:

    "Staff Commander RFSS
    Munich

    Munich, 25th March 1936

    Staff order no. 26

    Also: Chief Adjutant's Office RFSS
    SS Main Office
    SD Main Office
    Race and Settlement Main Office.

Re.: Free provision of items of clothing to staff members.

1.) Effective immediately, the practice of providing items of clothing and equipment to staff members free of charge and on loan is prohibited. Therefore, there will be no more issuing of drill office tunics, either. Staff members have to acquire those from the
Reichszeugmeisterei or other licensed companies at their own expense.

2.) The items issued up until now may be kept by the staff members if their necessity for official use is substantiated. However, they have to be precisely registered and accounted for in compliance with SS service regulation no. 17.

3.) Exempt from the above prohibition are:

    a) 1 earth grey uniform (tunic and boot-cut pants), 1 pair of boots, 1 field cap for those NCOs and men who participate in ordered drill duty. This exception does not apply to officers.
    b) Tornister packs and other items of equipment for special exercises (pack march etc.). However, these are to be issued on a case-by-case basis and to be taken back into the stocks after completion.
    c) Special items of clothing for technical service upon application and after endorsement by the Head of SS Administration.

    The Staff Commander RFSS
    Munich
    signed Pohl

    SS-Brigadeführer

    For the accuracy:
    [signed]
    SS-Sturmführer and
    Head of Staff
    "
