a badly damaged field cap...can it be saved ?

I lined my collection closet with cedar (Of course, I had to reline ALL the closets after the little woman saw how it turned out) since it's suppose to help and since someone else in the house can't stand the slightest smell of moth balls.

Final pictures following a sunday morning spent working on the cap.

The chin strap has been repaired and cleaned, kokardes added for a prussian officer and a few pictures taken in the sunlight.

Interestingly the cap band is joined at the front rather than the back.

The peak and sweatband had been repaired by a previous owner and sown back on with light blue cotton ? for some reason. That's now all sorted.

Tony, great job, looks very nice ! is the peak original to the body of the cap ? only I thought that the M17 Officers service cap had a Field grey visor ?......of course their are always exception to the rule.

Hi Steve

I agree that a text book example should be field grey peak with field grey chinstrap.

Whether this example was originally made with a black peak is hard to say as the peak has been re-attached at some point. It is a leather one rather than fibre so I think that's quite promising in respect of it being original to the cap. It also fits well on the cap and is in tune with the sweat band on the cap.

I notice the example shown at Kaiser's Bunker has a black peak which is also re-assuring (for me at any rate) in respect of maybe they were made with black peaks still in the the manufacturers stock.

As in all cases never say never.................

Also is that a reference book you are showing ? If so would you recommend it?

Tony, as I said, "exceptions to the rule " re/your cap.Re/reference books, these Huge coffee table type books,very informative, full of actual items in colour from collections all over the world, (but still wanting in various areas)......"Imperial German Field Uniforms and Equipment 1907-1918" three volumes, by "Johan Somers" published by "Schiffer Military History", approx £50 a volume. I have vols 1 & 2. Highly recommended.
