Steve- Is is possible to put this cap in a specific time frame? Am I correct in saying that it could have been used at any point from 1907 to 1917, with the introduction of the M17 einheitsmuetze ?

Yes..1907 to 1917 officially, but they were worn up to the end of the Great War...and beyond into the fledgling Reichswehr, but yours still has its cockades on and seeing though it ended up in the States, it will be war booty.....

Hey Mo,

Bargain find !

As Steve has already said it's a schirmmütze 1907 field grey uniform cap for an NCO of the Imperial Army, it is missing its peak and the buttons are for the chin strap that would have also adorned the cap.

It is private purchase and the cap could be worn by NCO's only by regulations as the other ranks had the pork pie cap. The ncos had their own cockades as well, with split pins rather than the larger sow on style for other ranks.

It is very restorable btw. need a peak, tlc and a bit of time.......

It needs to be put in shape again, and a Wappen.
