Anything else you'd like to add?

I'm wondering about his position, and what he might have done during his service and am hoping someone might recognize the uniform by the collar insignia.
He was a carpenter who lived in a small village on the Russia/Austria border, perhaps Lopatyn, L'viv Oblast. Got his first furlough in 1905 at age 28, returned home and got married.
The story my grandparents tell is that he eventually went AWOL and somehow made it to the US.
What sorts of details would be helpful? I don't know all that much ...
Hello.
His rank is private and belong to railway and telegraph unit.
His duties would have been based round building and maintaining railway and telegraph lines.
