Military Long Service Cross, III class for 6 years’ service on 'plastic' ribbon.

Article about: That is very remarkable Richard! A lovely medal. I too have never heard of the plastic ribbon, something else to add to my want list!

Default Military Long Service Cross, III class for 6 years’ service on 'PLASTIC' RIBBON.

Hi Chaps, here's a bit of a odd one. The medal is a Military Long Service Cross, III class for 6 years service (4th issue) 1913 to '18, a variant with silvered medallion and oak wreath. It was instituted on 12th March 1890 for long and faithful service in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces. This example is for O/Rs (officers had a different design of medal) It's quite rare as it has a silvered medallion with an oak wreath surround. Others had a plain brass roundel without a wreath.

The really odd thing about this one to me is the plastic/celluloid ribbon. From what I can gather they were a private purchase item experimenting with a different material. This one is not in great condition as you can see with cracks & a chip & is very delicate & hardened with age,

    Cheers,

    Richard.

Here's a couple of the standard design with cloth ribbon.

Cheers Greg, I've only ever seen a few. I doubt if many survived!

I don't collect AH items so I never look at very many
posts concerning them. But as long as I have collecting
imperial items, I had never heard of a plastic ribbon.

That has to be a very rare variation. Very interesting indeed.

Yeah, I have only seen very few on dealers sites over the years. I don't think they were ever standard issue. I wonder if they ever did an Iron Cross version?!!

Not that I have ever heard of.
I won't say never because just when you think you have
seen it all, something different pops up.

Yeah, too true Greg. I must admit I do like it when something pops up proving I don't know everything!! lol

    I've just seen & bought these two: - http://www.emedals.com/collectors-ga...-medals-eu4308

They say in their description: -
"Two Austrian Medals - Jubilee Cross 1908, on Military on original PLASTIC ribbon; Long Service Cross for XII Years, bronze, on original PLASTIC ribbon. Very good/fine condition. Plastic ribbons were not officially issued. Plastic ribbons for few awards only were manufactured and sold in Vienna in early 1900?s by a private firm, thus available as "private purchase". Though considered "modern" at the time plastic ribbons did not achieve wide popularity and disappeared as novelty in a short time. Very scarce ribbons."

With 3 of them, you will have the largest
collection of them of anyone I know.

    Very nice.
