Klaas Heer for opinions...

Here is one of my recent finds, a quite early type 2 Klaas. Tapered tang with the hole in it for plating, brass based pommel, but a light weight guard! Klaas was transitioning here from the initial type 1 configuration. The scabbard is the type seen often with these early Klaas's, along with the usual asterisks it features a broad tip that stands out from others! Original 2. type Klass Heer dagger, but unfortunately he has have some traces of cleaning.

Beautiful example Kevin! It’s easy to see why Klaas heers are coveted by army specialists. I like the plated blade with this guard I might stand corrected but the earliest Klass army daggers with the type-1 guard seem to always have a non plated blade. Vedran I learned a long time ago not all daggers are perfect you accept them as you find them - Great Klaas example!

Klaas is one of my favorite knife makers. I have a few knives made by them, just that none of them are really TR. Maybe some day.

The eagles on these are just super.(The Face on the eagle is hilarious) The grip on this one too looks like the day it was made. A Very nice set!

Wow Kevin, what A GEM. Klaas, along with Pack are two makers that I have often contemplated focusing my collection on and you can see why looking at the work and the quality of this piece. Look at the enhancing on those pommel acorns, fantastic attention to detail.
First rate example.

Here is mine. Very similar but without the same level of enhancement. What's interesting about this piece is that the central grip cut out has been deliberately filed at an angle, meaning the ferrule seat is skew when slotted over the tapered tang. It is a perfect fit, hand cut to the tang, so as it left the factory. My only conclusion is that when the worker was fitting / filing the grip / tang, the 2 side drilled holes, where off centre and he filed it anyway.
Goes to show, mistakes were made and not everything was perfect.

Another interesting observation with this 2nd style early Klaas configuration, on all examples, the half circle upper wing spline either side of the eagles head, you will notice the right hand side is much thicker than the almost non-existent left side. Another way to determine the 2nd style from the 1st

Boy Degens, that is a beauty you have there! Love the look of the fittings and the scabbard is interesting in the pebbling pattern.. great info on the wing spline too, haven't noticed that. I have always spotted the difference between the type 1 and 2 by the oversized swaz wreath with pedistal and the larger distinct head shape. You will have me looking at my grip to tang fit on mine now!
