Thanks for showing a very rare and valuable piece. Noticed the grip safety also. Bringing huge money these days if you can find one. Thanks for sharing a real treasure.

I hate to rain on someone's parade, but as a person who primarily collects Imperial Navy Lugers, I feel obliged to point out that this particular pistol is not representative of a 1917 Navy.
Compare with the attached photo of a correct 1917 Navy and you can see some obvious differences.
1. The front sight is not correct for any Imperial military luger; P.04, P.08 or LP.08 (Navy, Army, Artillery)
2. The 1916 and 1917 dated P.04 has the date in small numbers on the left side of the receiver and the left side of the front sight (see attached photo)
3. The 1916 and 1917 dated P.04 does not have a grip safety. (The "1908" Models don't either.)
4. All Navy Lugers have the Navy Crown proof on the left side of the breech block, adjacent to the pin. You can clearly see it on the attached photo.
5. Navy Lugers all have the commercial style "hidden" serial numbers. The last two digits would not appear on the side of the sideplate, they would be on the bottom edge.
6. The rear (right) end of the sear bar should slant toward the barrel from bottom to top. ( \ not / )
I thought it said artillery, just noticed the title. An artillery Luger is what is on my want list.
Regards,
John
