Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Officers from all branches of the Armed Services had the option to buy the Ledermantel as an optional extra to their basic uniform requirements.

I always prefer to see examples with dagger hangers and rank shoulder board fittings. Those without these can simply be civillian leather overcoats.

Of course, the leather overcoat was much loved by the Gestapo and Hollywood films!

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Matt. This is an old thread but reminded me how much I like this coat. I just lost my winter fat and can actually wear this jacket now...although its now summer and hot out....

    great looking coat Dean.
I have a Modern made one I wear in the winter when I have to wear a suit. They are quite warm and stylish.

An old thread indeed. Now that i look at it again and since i have studied these coats a bit, i must say it looks like a civilian coat to me due to the button configuration, cuff titles and belt.
Dean does it have a slit for a dagger?

I just looked, Chris . I don't see one. So it's def not for an officer which I pretty much has that feeling. It very well may be a civi but could have been used by a soldat. I just like to think a soldier wore it once. It's def from the TR era, however. Funny thing is, it's a dark green and matches the leather interior of the Mercedes Benz I'm buying! Not a new MBZ, it's a 1991 300 E " 4-matic" and is a four wheel drive. I'm heavily stoked to get it!
