Hello, I am trying to research SA collar tabs without much success. I am looking for a wartime enlisted mans set of tabs to go on a wartime brown shirt. My question is - were enlisted mens collar tabs piped after 1939? David Littlejohn writes that they were 'Prior to 1939 collar patches of non commissioned ranks were unpiped, but thereafter all patches were piped in yellow or white' (The SA 1921-45; Hitlers Stormtroopers p.9 Osprey Publishing). The problem is that other sources for example SA Collar Tab & Shoulder Board Identification Gallery show various tabs identified as post 1939 with no piping. Who is right? Any help appreciated. Doug

    Hello,

whatever is said in books or whatever, here a part from new orders
    about shoulder-straps, collar-patches and/or pipings. The publication
is from the "Verordnungsblatt der Obersten SA-Führung", number 8
    from July 1, 1939. Ziffre-number 86 (order FO 2b 13735):
    Änderung von Abzeichen. Page 55.

    Question SA Collar Tabs

You asked for the lowest ranks.
    You need shoulder-straps with a bright-grey backing (Fuss-SA).

Thanks very much indeed for your help. This is different from any of the other sources I have found in stating that the thread should be silver or gold rather than yellow or white. The book I mentioned says that silver and gold was for officer ranks only.

    Hello Douglas,

here another order. From May 20, 1941.
    Read the words:
    white (weisse) and yellow (gelbe) artificial silk (Schlauchschnur);
and silver (silberfarbene) colored or gold (goldfarbene) colored (Cellophanschnur).
    Two clearly different materials.

I do not know, but I doubt some authors hardly ever have seen actual uniform-regulations.

In older regulations it was noted to be Silberschnur and Goldschnur.

Which is right. The 1939/1941 regulations posted by Wim specify:

    Enlisted men (Sturmmann through Haupttruppführer):
    - white cord piping (if the former button color was silver)
    - yellow cord piping (if the former button color was gold)

    Officers (Sturmführer through Obergruppenführer):
    - silver-colored or aluminum cord piping (if the former button color was silver)
    - gold-colored cord piping (if the former button color was gold)

    Thanks very much indeed.

So I need to find yellow or white piped tabs for my post 1939 enlisted mans shirt. Not easy to find it seems.
