Works well on paper items
Like many other tricks in the toolbox such as acetone testing painted items or the "burn test" on loose threads UV is a guide and will often unmask the worst fakes but as has been pointed out above, other checks / knowledge is also needed as sometimes UV will point to synthetics which do not mean fakes every time.
A UV light should be in your aresenal of weapons but so should a good bookshelf and a head full of learning!
Plus, use the forum, 100's of heads / opinions are better than one
