    Default Gautag

Actually, a "Gau" day badge with no connection whatsoever to an SA meeting or event badge.

    Gautag Magdeburg-Anhalt, Dessau 1938.

The badge appears to have the dreaded "zinc pest" which is essentially a wasting chemical reaction that can be stabilised to a degree. If you wish, gently clean both sides of the badge with warm soapy water using a soft toothbrush and then, apply a fine smearing of Vaseline. It helps, however it does not cure !

    Regards,

Gau is a district. Kind of like a county here in the states. Germany and then the greater Reich was divided into multiple Gau. The Gautag was a local celebration of the district that might include parades, meetings, celebrations etc.

Hi, these are usually called day badges and these were sold as commemoratives of the day, to help fund its activities, is this case for the Gau/district named. You see them for all sorts of groups, such as police and army, as well as local groups and most commonly for the arbeit tag/work day.
