The design is based on the former coat-of-arms for Hamborn (used in several variants after Hamborn was granted town rights in 1911 and until it was incorporated into the city of Duisburg in 1929). The red lion was taken from the coat-of-arms of Alexander von Horst, one of the last abbots of the former monastery at Hamborn, while the hammers symbolize mining.)
