Great examples...

I have an RFB buckle that also locks the opposite way. I don't know if it's a manufacturing mistake, a woman's buckle or just a maker's variant.

Here's an image of the RFB affiliated RFMB, Rote Frauen und Mädchenbund, women's broach. Perhaps they wore the buckle as well. If so, it could have locked the opposite way of the typical ones.
