Right then, I have made some progress with the queries about the PASGT. With the help of collector Chris Johnson and a bit of informed googling.
The prototype/testing phase PASGT program (GRP and Kevlar shell models) started in May of 1976. After that the first production contracts were to Gentex and Aqua-Aire in 1980 with first delivery to the Army in December 1981.
You will find some interesting stuff on these forum threads -
Pasgt maker marks - STEEL AND KEVLAR HELMETS - U.S. Militaria Forum
K-pot makers - PASGT HELMETS [REF] - U.S. Militaria Forum
Some (most? all?) of the other manufacturers are/include UNICOR, DEVILS LAKE/SIOUX, SPP, GENTEX, GIBRALTAR, STEMACO. The forums mentioned above will give you an idea of their various identifying symbols etc.
As regards the change from the simple two piece chinstrap rig, its all a bit vague, as there is an implication it was first done as an in-service modification before being introduced as a manufacturing step. Honestly, I don't know at the moment.

Thanks Greg for the update, never knew they piloted these as early as the 70's,production commenced from 81,wow that makes an mid 80's appear old, shame about the laws there's some cracking lids on at the moment.

Another update, late June 2015, new stuff in Indonesia, Russia, UK, and others. Probably a bit more before the end of the month too.
Please note - contributions are welcome. Do you have something that is not featured? Do you have more or better information than is there now? Do you simply have better pictures of something that is already there? CompoSite is a collaborative effort -it is open for you to use, you can also help build it.

Thank you for your attention.

After far far too long - I have been interrupted by deaths, house-repairs, feeling idle and/or depressed, going to the shops, having a shower (you know all the usual of day-to-day life...) - I have managed an update to CompoSite. Go to Composite Helmets, Ballistic helmets, Military helmets International Guide and you will find, if you look, exciting things, including an excellent detailed layout of a Swiss version of the Schuberth 826. Exciting, yes!
Please note - contributions always required and received with great delight (and processed immediately, usually, honest). Contact me on [email protected]. I intend sweeping through this forum and asking some of you for 'reprint permission' but don't let that stop you being proactive and offering pictures and text. Its a co-operative webpage and is only as good as its contributors.
