We've all seen helmets labelled as made by RBR. We've also seen helmets labelled as made by LBA (Lightweight Body Armour) which absorbed RBR proper in 2001. So far so good.

The thing is, what does 'RBR' actually mean? Is it just an acronym based on the owners' names ( no evidence for that) or the place they operated...not likely. Does it have any meaning related to body armour or protective clothing at all? Come come that, does it have *any* meaning at all? Does anyone have a clue?

You're (or "your" as most folk here say....incorrectly of course) gonna hate me but RBR can't be an acronym as it cannot be pronounced as a word......technically I think you'll find that "RBR" is an initialism.......in the Finance world it would be a "TLA", that being a Three Letter Abreviation....

By the way, I don't know what RBR stands for :-))

Well, I am appropriately shamed. I can't even think of the word I meant to use instead of 'acronym'. I'm sure there is one - maybe it *is* just 'abbreviation' but that doesn't feel right. Where *is* my copy of the ECONOMIST STYLE BOOK?

I wasn't so idle as to not waste another half-hour or so researching the possible meaning of 'RBR'. No progress. It'll probably turn out to be something really obvious, like....er, dunno boss.

I'm thinking that the B might stands for BRUCE who is the managing Director.

    Just a thought.

This is entirely sensible and one of us should do it. I totally forgot the fact that some element of RBR still existed in Australia even after the LBA takeover. It would seem reasonable to believe that someone there will know why they are called what they are. Names might even figure in it...

Mind you it is disconcerting to check their website and see that the overall trading name appears to be CCA PROTECT and RBR is a subsidiary. I quote -

"RBR Armour Systems Pty Ltd is a wholly Australian Owned company that specialises in the design and manufacture of ballistic products for military, Police, Security and Civil applications. RBR's name has been synonymous with ballistic protection for nearly 20 years in more that 60 countries worldwide."

Now obviously there is/could be/should be some relationship with the defunct UK RBR but it is notable that they say thry have been 'synonymous with ballistic protection for nearly 20 years' when it is *nearly twenty years* since RBR was taken over by LBA. This is convoluted, to say the least.

OK, I'll contact them. I suggest no-one else does or they'll think we're all more nuts than these companies usually do when we ask them questions. At least this time I don't have to translate my query into Slovene or Romanian - and still get no response - though to be fair even using English with Morgan Composites doesn't seem to elicit much more engagement.

Thanks for the reminder, Phil, very handy and interesting.
