I will look tonight and make some pictures,but it's a coat of arms .
That makes sense. A "top shelf" sword of this quality would often be bought by an officer from an aristocratic family and the addition of the family Arms to the sword was not unusual, for this select group. May be possible to identify the original owner through the Arms.
Now that does add to the beauty!. I've never seen a coat of arms on the handguard like that before. Very personalized piece.
