I always thought the folding hand guard was for the slick look and for the Naval/Calvary forces,to be worn in tight/confining spaces.
I have seen these in all types of service so I look forward to learning more here! Which is why I love this site!!!

Im looking at this part of the hand guard...why was this created?
Why for the Kriegsmarine ?
and why not any other branch of service that does not have this special attachment?
why do the Kriegsmarine dagger have a similar mechanism to hold the dagger in place ?
