The reason for the differences in toning between the scabbard
and the dagger itself could be because someone has polished
the eagle and crossguard - they look too glossy or shiny
    compared to any I've seen.

Regardless, it is a nice dagger.........!

    Very well observed Steve.
Maybe someone cleaned the dagger with the acid, and removed all brass patina. Unfortunately, very sad.

Good job Max!! The only known maker to have the release button in the front is WKC.....AND......just a little trivia to see if anyone remembers,, why do the Naval swords and daggers have release buttons?

Larry, i'm not 100% sure, but I think that realising button system are used to avoids fallout dagger from scabbard, probably in to the sea.

Realising button system was not only use for naval daggers:

Kindom of Yugoslavia - dagger for police officer - type1936.
Kindom of Yugoslavia - dagger for police officer - type1930.
Kindom of Yugoslavia - dagger for infantry army officer type1939.

I doubt this was cleaned with acid, This is a really nice beautiful piece in hand, the flash and the sunlight in the photo's make it look a lot shinier then it is, it still has plenty of age/patina in the low lying areas, the high relief areas are brighter so it was probably cleaned or buffed up at some point, and not all fittings and scabbards were gilted, that was an extra cost, some were just left bronze and then lacquered, which I believe is the case here. And I did read your thread larry, but if the sailor gets drunk and falls overboard with the dagger then the release button wont do much good hahaha!
